French global footballer Antoine Griezmann has attracted criticism after posting an image of himself in a fancy dress outfit on his Twitter account.

The professional footballer, who plays internationally for France and as a forward for Atlético Madrid, showed off his costume on Twitter earlier today.

Griezmann, who is white, had his face and limbs painted black and was also wearing a wig and holding a basketball in the photo. He's wearing an National Basketball Association 1969 All-Stars uniform.

However, in the end, the backlash proved too much, with Griezmann forced to delete the post across his social media platforms.

At the time of this posting, the tweet had been retweeted more than 5,000 times and had more than 2,500 responses.

He endured a hard start to the current campaign, but has seen his production pick up over recent weeks, with the former Real Sociedad man having racked up 7 goals and 5 assists between La Liga and the Champions League to this point.

He initially tried to temper the backlash by asking people to "calm down" and explaining it was merely a tribute to the Harlem Globetrotters.
