Haley's Chanukah gift in blocking nasty anti-Israel Security Council resolution

Israel's military said no live fire was aimed at Abu Thraya and it was impossible to determine the cause of death.

Palestinian UN envoy Riyad Mansour said the General Assembly would vote on a draft resolution calling for Trump's declaration to be withdrawn, which was vetoed by the United States in the 15-member UN Security Council on Monday.

Palestinian health officials said Abu Thuraya was shot in the head while demonstrating Friday in Gaza amid unrest following President Donald Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

US Ambassador Nikki Haley on Tuesday (Dec 19) warned countries that she will report back to President Donald Trump with the names of those who support a draft resolution rejecting the US decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

Haley's tweet on Tuesday was not her first time warning that the USA would be "taking names" at the U.N. She similarly used the line in January, shortly after taking office, when she advised countries not to cross the U.S.

Fourteen other members of the Security Council supported the resolution - a move Erdogan described as "important and meaningful".

The two countries circulated a draft resolution on Tuesday that mirrors the vetoed measure, reaffirming that any decision on the status of Jerusalem has no legal effect and must be rescinded.

Only 10 such sessions have been convened, and the last time the General Assembly met in such a session was in 2009 on occupied East Jerusalem and Palestinian territories.

Knowing in advance that the USA would veto Monday's Security Council resolution, the Israeli delegation refrained from mounting the kind of intensive lobbying effort it has in the past in such situations.

While the General Assembly is beyond the reach of a US veto, unlike the Security Council its resolutions are non-binding.

"What we witnessed here in the Security Council is an insult", she said.

Erdogan has been among the most vocal critics of Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem. Palestinians want the capital of an independent Palestinian state to be in the city's eastern sector, which Israel captured in a 1967 war and annexed in a move never recognised internationally.
