Hayne played nine seasons in the NRL for the Parramatta Eels before his shock announcement in October, 2014 he was leaving for the United States to pursue a career in the NFL.

Civil lawsuit documents filed to the Santa Clara County Court in California on Wednesday (NZ time) claim Hayne had non-consensual sexual intercourse in December, 2015 with a woman only identified as "Ms V".

The complaint also includes claims of sexual battery, gender violence, infliction of emotional distress and negligence.

"He unequivocally and vehemently denies the allegations which are the subject of the civil complaint", the player's Sydney lawyer, Ramy Qutami, said in a statement on December 20.

A former San Francisco 49ers player now playing professional rugby in Australia has been sued by a California woman who says he sexually assaulted her. "Mr Hayne has not been served with any proceedings or formal complaint relating to the incident". The Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office is said to have reviewed and rejected the criminal case for insufficient evidence in October previous year. Hayne met up with the group before taking the woman back to his San Jose home in an Uber.

She then had "no recollection of how she got into (Hayne's) home other than faint recollections of an elevator and moving down a hallway", the court documents allege.

"When Ms V awoke the following morning, still experiencing tremendous vaginal pain, she was naked and covered in a single sheet on a bed with a large pool of blood next to her", another attorney, Micha Star Liberty is quoted as saying.

The suit claims that the plaintiff was a virgin at the time, and had been afraid to come forward for several months because she was "fearful" that she would be discredited, or blamed for reporting the alleged assault, because Hayne was a high-profile athlete.
