The move of prompting users to use their Adhaar name while opening a new account is aimed at curbing the number of fake accounts on Facebook that now has over 241 million users in India.

Earlier, Facebook triggered a new controversy after it confirmed that it was prompting new users to sign up with names as per Aadhaar in order to curb fake profiles. Fortunately, that is not what's happening here. Given that the prompt appears while creating a new Facebook account, there could be a possibility for the linking to make its way to the existing accounts anytime in the near future. It is to be mentioned here that this prompt is now used for a small percentage of users and can only be seen while signing-up via the mobile site by selected users. It says signing up with real name makes it easier to connect with friends and family. With the ever-increasing pool of internet users, the country is a major market for Facebook and will play a big role in the growth of the site. Facebook India further reiterated in the post that the request to enter name as per Aadhaar card was optional and not mandatory for new user registration. It is just suggesting people use the same name that is in their Aadhaar card. Facebook, of course, wants you to use your real name, and this is just one way to encourage said use.
