Triple Talaq Bill: Ahead of Rajya Sabha tabling, Congress undecided, BJP upbeat

The government on Tuesday said it is in talks with the Congress for ensuring smooth passage of the triple talaq Bill in the Rajya Sabha, where it is expected to be taken up on Wednesday.

DMK MP Kanimozhi and NCP leader Majeed Memon also said they were against criminalisation and hence the triple talaq bill in its present form is not acceptable.

However, the Bill was opposed by MPs from RJD, AIMIM, BJD, AIADMK and All India Muslim League, who called it arbitrary in nature.

In 2017, the BJP emerged as the largest party in the Rajya Sabha vertook Congress to become the largest political party in the Rajya Sabha, where it now has 58 members against 57 of the main opposition party.

The Bill will be introduced by Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad in the upper house.

As Congress extended its support, it also recommended that there were firm lacunae in the Bill that looked-for to be fixed before being put into practice.

The government lacks a majority in the upper House and is making efforts for the bill's smooth passage by reaching out to opposition parties.

According to the proposed law, giving instant talaq would attract the jail term of three years and a fine.

In Lok Sabha last week, the Congress and some other parties had demanded that the Bill should be sent to the Standing Committee, but the government rejected their demand. The party, however, opposes the provision in the bill criminalising the pronouncement of instantaneous triple talaq.

And if the Opposition insists on vetting the bill by a parliamentary panel, it will lead to delay and be passed only in the next session of parliament.
