Vaccinations in United Kingdom may do little to halt deadly 'Aussie flu'

The HSE has revealed a number of people have died from the flu as cases of the strong "Aussie" strain doubled in just one week.

Government statistics showed 1,111 people were struck down with the disease as temperatures plummeted last week - a 156 per cent jump on the previous seven days.

A flu vaccine, available at pharmacies and in good supply in the United States, may not offer adequate protection against Type A, subtype H3N2, the influenza virus strain now circulating in the country, the San Francisco Chronicle reported on Thursday.

Dr Kevin Kelleher, Director of the HSE's Health Protection Surveillance Centre said: "Influenza-like illness has increased in all age groups except in those aged 0-4 years.

It is not too late to get vaccines", says IMO member Dr Ray Wally.

The Saints failed on an attempted fake field goal when kicker Wil Lutz was tackled one yard short of the first down. Winston led a pair of 75-yard scoring drives in the opening half, but was also intercepted twice before halftime.

People who fall sick with "Aussie flu" will suffer from typical flu symptoms but they will be far more severe.

The H3N2 subtype, which is a strain of influenza A, triggered two and a half times the normal number of cases in Australia.

A further 73 have been hospitalised - causing medics to urge people to get vaccinated as the flue "actively circulates" in Ireland.

But two weeks ago, 522 cases of type A and 546 cases of type B were recorded across England and Wales - with 43 cases yet to be identified.

On Monday, it was revealed that Conor McGregor had caught the virus, detailing in an Instagram post published on Monday morning: "Well that was a wild New Year's Eve".

Despite the scary news, 29-year-old brawler Conor - who turned to boxing in 2017 to take on Floyd Mayweather in a Las Vegas bout - had some positive words in his Instagram post.

While this year's flu season may not be the worst statistically, there are more cases than usual, and East Texas is one of the hot spots.

'I'll leave that with the rest of the bad behind me in 2017 and take with me the many great experiences I've had this year (sic)'.

"The UK are using the same vaccine that we used in Australia in preparation for their flu season", Mr Bartone said.
