Beacon officer among four dead after avalanche hits vehicle in Kashmir

A beacon official died while as six civilians have gone missing after two avalanches hit Sadhna top in north Kashmir's Kupwara district on Friday.

The death toll due to the avalanche had reached 11 persons, the DC said, while stating that the rescue operation was nearly over in the area. However, according to a current report the three rescued have been identified.

The tragedy struck on Friday afternoon when a passenger Tata Sumo going to Tangdar from Kupwara, bearing registration number JK09A/3249, and a Beacon vehicle, and also some pedestrians were hit by an avalanche near Sadhna Top on the Kupwara-Tangdar road.

The rescue operation continued during the intervening night of Friday-Saturday.

Officials said that the Rashid is now undergoing treatment at District Hospital Kupwara while Bhat has been shifted to SKIMS Soura for specialized treatment. Official sources told GNS that three bodies two of them of females, recovered by rescue team comprising of police, SDRF, 3 JAKLI and 7 RR, besides local volunteers.

The chief minister conveyed her sympathies to the bereaved families, he said.

He said instructions have been given to Deputy Commissioner Kupwara to release the relief immediately.

Minister for Tourism, Tassaduq Hussain Mufti today expressed grief over the death of 10 persons who were buried alive in snow avalanches that struck Sadhna Top in Tangdhar sector of Kupwara district yesterday.

Mir also issued directions to provide better medical facilities to the injured, the spokesman said.
