Lalu Yadav's Sentence Will Not Impact RJD's Ties With Us: Congress

With RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav sentenced to three-and-a-half years in jail and fined Rs 10 lakh by a special CBI court in a fodder scam case, the Bihar Congress on Saturday asserted that Lalu's conviction will not have impact on the party's ties with the RJD in the state.

A total of six cases related to the scam, were being probed by the investigation authorities.

It is unclear whether the 69-year-old will be able to walk out of jail in the near future. A bail plea will also be moved in the high court, Tejashwi told a press conference at the residence of his mother and former Bihar Chief Minister Rabri Devi.

A special CBI court in Ranchi pronounced the quantum of punishment for Lalu a few minutes ago.

Media reports quoting the opinions of lawyers said that the veteran politician can be awarded three to seven years in prison.

Lalu was found guilty in another fodder scam case in 2013 after which he had to resign from his Lok Sabha seat.

The counsel said failure to pay a fine of Rs 5 lakh each under the IPC and the PCA would entail another six months in jail for the RJD leader.

He also added that they will approach the High Court for bail.

He said instructions have been given to Deputy Commissioner Kupwara to release the relief immediately. Mir also issued directions to provide better medical facilities to the injured, the spokesman said.

On Friday, Lalu Prasad sought a minimum punishment citing health issues.

Lalu Prasad is at present cooling his heels in Birsa Munda Central Jail in Ranchi. "I am sure our Chief Laluji will attend RJD's crucial meeting tomorrow" says Bihar party chief Ramchandra Purve.

The CBI special judge had on December 23 acquitted former Bihar chief minister Jagannath Mishra and five others in the case. This case relates to the fraudulent withdrawal of Rs. 84.5 lakh from the Deoghar district treasury between 1990 and 1994.

Lalu Prasad Yadav was convicted in the multi-million-rupee fodder scam.
