Google Pay brings all of Google's payment platforms under one roof, mostly

If you have purchased an ebook, entered your payment information in Chrome or purchased something in a store - you know what I am talking about.

Google just announced that it is merging all of its payment services into a single service dubbed as "Google Pay".

The company replaced the image with one of the sweatshirt alone, and initially kept the product for sale on its website. For its part, H&M released a statement apologizing and agreeing with those who were "upset about the image".

"With Google Pay, it'll be easier for you to use the payment information saved to your Google Account, so you can speed through checkout with peace of mind".

Google Pay should make payments hassle-free in the West, although it looks like Google probably won't be bringing it to India anytime soon. The new brand is supposed to give users a single, unified platform for their purchases across all their devices and in-store, while removing all the confusion that revolves around the Android Pay and Google Wallet brands.

In a company blog post, VP of product management for payments Pali Bhat described this as more of a rebranding than a change to the underlying products or technology. So far, Google pay is already enabled for Airbnb, Dice, Fandango, HungryHouse and Instacart, along with other apps and websites.

How does all of this affect Google Tez, the UPI based payments platform that Google has pushed in India? Android Pay was supposed to launch here at some point of time but then Google made a decision to launch a market-specific app called Tez here instead. Also falling under Google Pay is Google Check out, the web-centric PayPal competitor.
