A number of National Basketball Association coaches were furious that ESPN published and featured Ball's comments prominently, including Rick Carlisle and Stan Van Gundy, who threatened to quit participating in interviews in games televised by ESPN. Brandon Ingram and Julius Randle kept the Lakers in the game, making eight and six points respectively. Dan Woike‏ of the Los Angeles Times noted the forward was diagnosed with a mild left ankle sprain. The Lakers couldn't hold on to a five-point lead with 1:25 left in the fourth, with the Mavericks tying the score after Harrison Barnes blew by Kyle Kuzma for a game-tying basket.

The Lakers go on a three-game road trip, starting with the Dallas Mavericks on January 13 at 11:00 A.M. PST. "I would go close to nearly threatening, 'If you keep opening your mouth ... we are going to trade your son from the Lakers'". Ball and Ingram continued their excellent shooting nights and the Lakers came out on top 93-81, winning their third-consecutive game. Lonzo, who has appeared in 35 games, is up to 10.2 points per game, in addition to 7.1 assists and 7.1 rebounds per night.

It was a nip-and-tuck performance by the Lakers (15-27).

Los Angeles led by six with just over five minutes left in the second quarter before the Mavericks erupted with 15 straight points.

Wesley Matthews made a pair of free throws with 42 seconds remaining in overtime.

Lonzo returned to the court in the fourth, and the Lakers scored dunks early.

Ball scooped up the loose ball but his desperation shot was well short, leading to overtime. As a team, the Lakers shot just 41 percent from the field and 13 of 38 from the three-point line but that was still good enough to take down the Spurs who were playing without three of their starters.

But where Ball can only catch his team's greatest player (Kobe Bryant) either in the rafters or on the phone, Smith Jr. need only look across the locker room to see his in Dirk Nowitzki.

The Lakers front court scored early in the second half.
