GOP Memo Reveals Rosenstein Approved Surveillance Of Carter Page

Former FBI Special Agent Asha Rangappa on Monday knocked down suggestions by Republican lawmakers that the Justice Department had acted improperly by extending surveillance on former Trump campaign operative Carter Page as a part of the Russian Federation investigation.

Democrats who have read the document say Republicans have cherry-picked facts to create a misleading and risky narrative.

Berman remarked that Republicans may be using the FISA warrant as an excuse to attack Rosenstein because he took charge of the Russian Federation investigation after Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself.

Trump needs to get Rosenstein out of the way before he can fire Mueller. "But there's no no mystery about the fact that he's livid at [Attorney General Jeff] Sessions for recusing himself and livid at Rosenstein for appointing a special counsel". The Trump administration has indicated it wants the memo to be made public, while officials at the Justice Department have urged caution.

The House committee might vote as soon as Monday on releasing tightly held documents on the probe. Asked about the issue on CBS' "Face the Nation" on Sunday, Marc Short, the White House's head of legislative affairs, said that if the memo outlined serious concerns, "the American people should know that". "The Department of Justice has to go into a FISA court and request an extension of any surveillance that's ongoing".

In the memo, Republicans alleges that senior intelligence officials abused the surveillance program to target Trump's campaign as part of a political bias and failed to properly vet the application. "While President Trump has the utmost respect and support for the rank-and-file members of the F.B.I., the anti-Trump bias at the top levels that appear to have existed is troubling".

The FBI had been tracking Page, who was previously based in Moscow, since 2013, but was never charged with any wrongdoing.

A trip Page took to Russian Federation in July 2016, while working on Trump's campaign as a foreign policy adviser, caught the attention of the bureau, and law enforcement began conducting surveillance on him in the fall of 2016, shortly after he left the campaign, reported the NYT.

The development may signal that Rosenstein could face renewed criticism from within his own party, including from the White House.
