Intel partners with hardware giants for 5G-loaded PCs in 2019

Specifically, the chipmaker is planning to use its XMM 8000 series commercial 5G modems, which are expected to begin shipping later next year, as the basis for the delivery of what it claims will be the first high-performing 5G-connected PCs to come into the market.

Intel announced today that it is collaborating with Dell, HP, Lenovo and Microsoft to bring 5G connectivity to Windows PCs with the Intel XMM 8000 series commercial 5G modems. Recently, Intel rolled out the world's largest 5G deployment with KT Corporation, bringing to life 22 5G links at 10 separate sites which brought life to image capture viewpoints, IPTV, VR, Wi-Fi and other technologies that call for fast, reliable LTE data transfers.

"This shows the building blocks being put into place", said Rob Topol, Intel's general manager for 5G technologies, in a conference call with reporters.

AT&T also said it plans to virtualize 75 percent of its network by 2020, after reaching its 2017 goal of 55 percent. The first recipients of AT&T's next-gen network include: Dallas, Texas; Waco, Texas; and Atlanta, Georgia .

"Intel will showcase the power of 5G on a PC by livestreaming video over the 5G network", the company says. It's also showing eSIM functionality-as of September 2017, all of Intel's modem solutions for PCs support eSIM in enterprise and consumer segments.

Intel also announced it entered a multi-year collaboration with Speadtrum to create a 5G phone platform by the second half of 2019.

Intel introduced its upcoming portfolio of commercial 5G modems, including the XMM 8000 series - Intel's first family of 5G radio multi-mode commercial modems - in November a year ago. They plan to develop a 5G smartphone platform for China that will feature an Intel 5G modem and will be targeted to coincide with 5G network deployments in 2019.

It will be interesting to see how the competition between Intel and Qualcomm will push forward the new Always Connected PC category.

Over at MWC (Mobile World Congress) which kicks off at the start of next week, Intel will be demonstrating a concept detachable 2-in-1 device which has an early version of a 5G modem running alongside one of the firm's latest 8th-gen Core i5 processors.
