This year's flu vaccines are preventing about 36% of flu cases in vaccinated people but are working better, at a rate of about 59%, in young children, according to the CDC.

In its weekly influenza report, the agency says the percentage of people reporting flu-like symptoms to doctors has dropped from the week before.

New numbers from the Saskatchewan Health Authority show the flu bug hasn't slowed down in the province.

The worst flu season in a decade is still not over, with 13 new children deaths reported after more than three months of unusually persistent misery across the U.S. The geographic spread of influenza in Puerto Rico and 48 states was reported as widespread; the District of Columbia, Hawaii, and OR reported local activity. Five states, Connecticut, Hawaii, Iowa, Utah, and Wisconsin, reported moderate activity of flu-like illness. "It seems the vaccine will still provide some protection from the influenza and probably won't make it as bad as it could have been".

"What is different about this year is that Influenza A and B are peaking at the same time, so we are seeing a lot of cases all at once", said Bourns.

The CDC does not report flu-related deaths.

In fact, Werker said that there have been twice as many cases of influenza type B this year than there were in 2014/2015, when that type was prominent.

But the vaccine was only about 25 percent effective against a strain called H3N2, a particularly nasty subtype associated with higher rates of hospitalizations and deaths than other strains.

There were 121 new lab-confirmed cases of influenza last week, bringing the total for the season to 2,422 cases since September 1.

These rates varied depending on age, with adults 65 and older hospitalized at the rate of almost 323 per 100,000 people in that same age group.

Not everyone should get the FluMist instead of the flu shot, though.

According to a Canadian study, elderly people who are sick with the flu are six times more likely to have a heart attack.

The state has long passed the previous record, set a year ago, when 130 people died and 2,422 were hospitalized.

"Sometimes with FluMist you might fight it off in your nose and you might not even get sick", Ellis says.
