Embattled Nashville Mayor Megan Barry said Tuesday she is stepping down after pleading guilty to stealing money from the city and admitting to an affair with her former bodyguard.

Months ago, it was confirmed that Barry had an affair with former police bodyguard Sgt. Robert Forrest since the spring of 2016.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, at the request of the local prosecutor, was investigating whether Ms. Barry or Mr. Forrest broke any laws concerning misuse of public funds.

Forrest earned $173,843.13 in overtime from July 2015 through January 15 of this year, according to city data, more than the amount earned by the four other police officers in Barry's detail combined.

Man takes a $1600 Uber ride home after drunken night out
Bachman's reaction to having taken a very expensive and very long Uber ride was just disbelief at the whole thing. He says he gave the driver five stars and even gave the driver cash to cover the cost of tolls on the way home.

"While my time as your mayor concludes today, my unwavering love and honest affection for this wonderful city and its great people shall never come to an end", Barry said in a statement.

According to The Tennessean, Forrest has also pleaded guilty to theft of property over $10,000. She admitted to stealing thousands of dollars while carrying on her affair with Forrest, though the details of how she stole the money is now unknown.

The scandal forced Barry to take a backseat in the biggest political fight of her career - approval May 1 for a referendum on raising four taxes to pay for a $5.4 billion transit plan.

TBI investigators say they looked at Forrest's phone and his emails after Barry admitted publicly to the affair.

The affidavit also said the TBI has found 260 deleted chats between Forrest's phone and Barry's phone number as well as 35 deleted call logs.

According to Metro Charter guidelines, Vice Mayor David Briley will take over as mayor until an election can be held in August.

If Barry had gone to trial and been found guilty, she could have been sentenced between three to 15 years in prison. She has agreed to reimburse the city of Nashville $11,000.

But the TBI affidavit filed with a search warrant on February 22, listed two possible criminal violations.

Man kills himself near White House
The Washington, DC, Metropolitan Police Department is taking the lead in the investigation, the Secret Service spokesperson said. The suicide took place a week after an armed Tennessee woman slammed her vehicle into a security barrier near the White House.

Barry routinely traveled without security before June 2016, records show. The documents do not say the woman is Barry. Forrest, who had spent more than 31 years with Metro Nashville Police and supervised the mayor's security detail over three administrations, has retired.
