Winter storm updates: Thundersnow, NYC flights canceled, thousands without power

Gov. Charlie Baker says Wednesday's storm is likely to bring more than a foot of snow to the Berkshires, scattered power outages and "minor to moderate coastal flooding" in communities still recovering from Friday's damaging nor'easter.

Another snowy, blowy nor'easter threatened a new round of power outages as it began moving up the East Coast on Wednesday, closing schools and government offices and raising concerns for utility customers still trying to bounce back from an earlier storm. And more cancellations are expected as conditions deteriorate during the day.

Between 8 and 12 inches (20 and 30 cm) of wet, heavy snow, some of it accompanied by thunder and lightning, were forecast for New York City and the surrounding suburbs in New Jersey and CT through to Thursday morning. Snow accumulations could easily surpass a foot in areas west of the I-95 corridor, with some places in northwest New Jersey forecast to get up to 2 feet.

"This evening could be different, though", she said, saying she was prepared for a tougher slog home.

Officials in at least two states are banning big rigs from major highways and warning other drivers to stay off the roads as a late-winter storm bears down on the Northeast. "We're a hardy bunch, so some snow and rain isn't going to stop us".

"Everyone should expect a long and challenging commute this evening", Baker said.
