MI is the only state with a decline in third-grade math.

DeVos, a billionaire with no teaching or administrative experience, tried to use the interview to push her idea that public schools do better when they're stripped of resources.

DeVos disclosed that she has not "intentionally" visited schools which are underperforming.

DeVos said that she was "frustrated" that Stahl neglected to ask her about any of her "really good ideas" for the nation's schools, such as "purchasing guns for teachers with money that is now being wasted on books".

DeVos pushed for school choice in her home state where charter schools reportedly have similar test scores to their public counterparts

"Maybe I should, yes", DeVos replied.

DeVos eventually acknowledged that public schools in MI need to do better. "And - often comes down to - I am committed to making sure that students have the opportunity to learn in an environment that is conducive to their learning".

The administration will start working with states to provide "rigorous firearms training" to teachers and other school personnel who volunteer to be armed, said Andrew Bremberg, director of the White House Domestic Policy Council.

Betsy DeVos: Michi-Yes, well, there's lots of great options and choices for students here. Stahl pressed her on whether this "disproportion in discipline" constitutes "institutional racism".

But DeVos did have time in the interview to note that MI schools were not preparing students as well as she thinks they should.

"We are studying that rule. Unfortunately, DeVos answered the questions as they were asked, rather than articulating her own philosophy and beliefs". She would not commit to continuing to require that the data be submitted. It was overwhelmingly seen as a disaster for DeVos, who struggled to answer very basic questions. "They just got the numbers wrong". It dismissed a lot more cases as well, according to Politico. "Please remember what Michelle Obama said about when they go low".

DeVos' philosophy towards education is all about school choice. Now, that criticism is resurfacing after DeVos faltered when asked about campus sexual assault in a new interview with 60 Minutes. She appeared to be unfamiliar with the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act, a federal civil rights law. "But again, I think this is an issue that is best decided at the local level by communities and by states". They asserted that at least one-third of such shootings could be prevented by more responsible reporting.

"But are they the same?"
