Parkland students are mocking new clear backpacks

This so-called safety measure, like so many others proposed in the wake of the horrific mass shooting-installing metal detectors, hiring more school resource officers, raising the minimum age to purchase an AR-15-is security theater. The students are being allowed through four monitored gates before school starts and only one after the opening bell.

Students from the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida have been at the centre of those protests, demanding more from their politicians and legislators and calling on US President Donald Trump to confront the issue.

"The process will be very similar to when you enter a sporting event, concert, or even Disney World", he wrote. The school district is "exploring options" to begin using metal-detecting wands at entrances and potentially permanent metal detectors.

"Feminine hygiene products that we need, we have to carry with us", said student Kacey Bartley. Last weekend, they took their fight for stricter gun control laws to Washington and other cities in what they called a March for Our Lives. Many students might be carrying items than they would rather not display to the entire student body: medicine, toiletries, etc.

Until then, at least we know when we'll be wall-crawling and web-swinging across Manhattan; and it's sooner rather than later. That said - no matter where you buy it, or which edition you get, you have a chance to grab these pre-order items.

Students will also be issued identification and lanyards to wear them by the end of the week, Thompson said.

Students also saw beefed up security on the first day back.

Kyrah Simon, 17, brought her lunch in a grocery bag but didn't bring any books or supplies.

Clear backpacks may deter some from bringing weapons into school, but without metal detectors people can still hide them in folders or in between papers, junior Isabella Pfeiffer said.

Judge rips Manafort's lawsuit to rein in Mueller
Rosenstein authorized Mueller to pursue allegations that Manafort colluded with Russian Federation in 2016. In a report unclassified in January 2017, USA intelligence agencies said the Kremlin wanted to help Trump.

Another student, Laura Hogg, also commented on the clear backpacks on Twitter Monday.

Stoneman Douglas junior Dylan Bowerman said he thinks the backpacks will make it harder to hide weapons, "but something about it seems like a violation of privacy". I feel sooo safe now.

"We were told previous year that he wasn't allowed on campus with a backpack on him", Gard, who taught Cruz, said. The bags were donated to the school by Walmart and the Broward Education Foundation, the Sun-Sentinel newspaper reported.

Other students were more direct in their Twitter activism. But newly enacted school safety policies aimed at preventing any more school shootings, they argue, go too far without going far enough.
