Apple said on Monday that it has achieved its goal of powering all of its global facilities, including data centers, offices and retail stores, with 100 percent renewable energy.

"Since 2011, all of Apple's renewable energy projects have reduced greenhouse gas emissions (CO2e) by 54 percent from its facilities worldwide and prevented almost 2.1 million metric tons of CO2e from entering the atmosphere", the company said. Apple says once complete, over 1.4 gigawatts of clean renewable energy generation will span across 11 countries.

Apple has gone from 16% renewable energy to 100% in eight years, with Carbon dioxide emissions falling by 58%. Around 286 MW of solar PV is also included in 626 MW of generation capacity, the highest amount recorded in one year.

Google has hit a new milestone in its efforts to go green and a year ago the company was able to purchase enough renewable energy to match all the electricity its operations used worldwide.

Most of Apple's suppliers are not operating on 100% renewable or clean energy, but 23 of them have committed to doing so, at least for their Apple products.

Other recent renewable energy initiatives include two new data centres in Denmark and plans to build a 400,000-square-foot data centre in Waukee, Iowa in the United States, with both facilities running on 100 percent renewable energy. The firm has also developed 485MW of wind and solar projects across six provinces of China to address upstream manufacturing emissions.

The introduction of feed-in tariffs in Hong Kong means that new second-generation solar technology, such as transparent "solar glass" - highly transparent solar cells - and thin-film solar cells, which rival the performance of traditional polysilicon cells, could be used on the windows and glass facades of our skyscrapers, allowing third parties to contribute to the grid through renewables.

"We're committed to leaving the world better than we found it", Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a prepared statement. This makes Google the first public cloud and company of its size to be powered 100 per cent by renewable energy. To be clear, the search giant is not powering its operations exclusively with 100 percent renewable energy. Apple's biggest link in the supply chain, Foxconn, has yet to sign up.
