While Zuckerberg's testimony and the privacy issues with Facebook were big news in Washington, some local users of Facebook seemed unconcerned.

Zuckerberg squirmed when pressed about a 2011 agreement with the Federal Trade Commission that was created to force Facebook to tighten its privacy controls. Several high-profile individuals, including Cher and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, publicly announced that they have deactivated their accounts.

Though consumers have been willing to subscribe to some online services, social media experts say when it comes to firms like Facebook - which has been free since its launch and whose ads can easily be scrolled past - a pay model is unlikely to catch on.

On top of regulators in the US, Singapore, China and other geographies launching investigations into the social media giant's privacy and data policies, the #DeleteFacebook movement has also been gaining steam globally.

Given its huge user base, Facebook is an attractive place to market.

While Facebook users can turn off some data collection used for advertising, it can't stop tracking entirely.
