A driver suspected of killing 10 people and injuring 15 more by ploughing a rental van into pedestrians in Toronto has appeared in court in the city.

Police said the suspect, 25-year-old Alek Minassian, was not known to them before Monday's carnage in Canada's most populous city, which also left 14 people injured. The judge read the charges, which also included 13 counts of attempted murder. But Facebook has confirmed the account was real, and Toronto police said on Tuesday they believe Minassian posted the message shortly before starting his attack.

"It's a sad thing, a very sad thing", one visitor told CP24 at the memorial this morning. A monk at a Toronto Buddhist temple Amarasingha frequented said she was a single mother of a seven-year-old boy.

Amarasingha had worked at school cafeterias around the city since 2015 and had just finished her first day at a school near the van scene when her life "was tragically cut short", school district Education Director John Malloy said in a statement.

"The minister respects the ongoing investigation the police are doing and agrees it is inappropriate to comment on it", Carlene Variyan said in an email.

"We're always balancing the need to know and the desire to know quickly to ensure that we have 100 per cent accuracy", he said.

Toronto City Councilor Cesar Palacio said D'Amico was a friend of his daughter, and he remembers her as "a brilliant young girl" who was interested in improving society.

"I can now confirm that unfortunately one of our employees has succumbed to her injuries", Peter Intraligi, president of Invesco Canada, said in a statement.

The identities of the other fatalities remained unknown, but an official with the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Toronto confirmed through a translator that two South Korean nationals were among the dead and that one other was injured.

The post on Minassian's Facebook account contained references to this online subculture.
