He's the first Iowa player drafted by Chicago since 1990.

The Bears used the seventh pick in the second round (39th overall) to bolster the questionable interior of their offensive line by selecting Iowa center James Daniels. Left guard was a need for the Bears. Veteran journeyman Eric Kush lined up in that spot during last week's veteran minicamp, and they've added veteran Earl Watford for depth.

The Bears needed help at guard with Josh Sitton gone and with Kyle Long recovering from ankle, shoulder and neck surgeries.

National Football League notebook: Cowboys TE Witten reportedly will retire
Owner and general manager Jerry Jones says Witten hasn't made a final decision and wanted the weekend to think about his future. Witten, who played collegiately at Tennessee , was drafted by the Cowboys in the third round of the 2003 draft.

Early speculation has the Bears moving Whitehair to guard and putting Daniels at center. He's the first Hawkeye drafted to the Bears since Bill Anderson, another center, in 1990.

"I'm putting that on hold and just trying to play as long as I can (with) the gift that God gave me", he said. He started 23 games at center during his sophomore and junior seasons. "But we also took the best players on the board at need positions".

At 6-foot-3 and 306 pounds, Daniels is small for a guard by National Football League standards, but Pace believes he's got enough anchor strength combined with agility to make the move, and that he's got room to grow physically because he's just 20.

"He's a physical, fast, athletic, highly intelligent player", Pace said. The Bears could use a backup, considering their only other quarterbacks are Chase Daniel and Tyler Bray. In 2017, he was named to the Academic All-Big Ten team. "He had like 500 total yards against us and we lost, 42-35".

".you get the point". I believe I get a lot of respect around here because I didn't ask for any handouts.

The Bears finished up a busy 2018 NFL Draft by taking outside linebackers Joel Iyiegbuniwe and Kylie Fitts, defensive lineman Bilal Nichols, and wide receiver Javon Wims. "He's not big enough or strong enough to have bad technique and be effective". But I don't feel like we're ever there.

"James is a hell of a developmental prospect, if you will", Ferentz said.
