While anti-war groups, civil libertarians, and many journalists were appalled by Haspel's "horrid" hearing performance-the current acting director of the Central Intelligence Agency insisted that she is just a "typical middle-class American" with a strong "moral compass" despite her role in the Bush administration's torture program-Donnelly vaguely said in his statement that he believes Haspel "has learned from the past".
"For those reasons, and after careful consideration, I will support Ms. Haspel's nomination to lead the agency to which she has dedicated her career", he added.
Haspel, the CIA's acting director and a career intelligence officer, faced grilling at the Senate Intelligence Committee about her role overseeing some CIA operations in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001, attacks.
"She would bring more direct, hard-earned experience to the role of CIA director than any leader in the agency's history", McConnell said Wednesday in a statement.
Ghana finally issues Ebola alert after deaths in Congo
Of these total cases, two tested positive for Ebola virus disease , according to the WHO. It has also confirmed that there are 11 other people that are now infected with Ebola .
"Ms. Haspel's role in overseeing the use of torture by Americans is disturbing".
During her confirmation hearing before the Senate, Haspel said she would not restart the interrogation programs used in the past and would resist any efforts from the president to implement the tactics into the US war on terror once again. "Her refusal to acknowledge torture's immorality is disqualifying".
But she would not say that torture is immoral. She pushed back on charges that the programme was immoral, insisting that her own "moral compass is strong", and fought to describe what she said were the CIA's successes in capturing most-wanted men.
A senior Democratic source told Fox News this week that it was unclear if the Senate Democratic leadership would whip against Haspel, and that several Democrats may eventually vote for her. Angus King (I-ME), who caucuses with Senate Democrats, said he would oppose Haspel.
Ireland bowl in inaugural Test against Pakistan
Shadab Khan and debutant Faheem Ashraf saved the day for Pakistan against Ireland as wickets kept falling at Malahide on Saturday. That all changed after lunch though as the visitors lost four wickets in the second session of the day.
"Sen. McCain's view of what the country's doing won the day", Graham told AP. And we know that in 2005, Haspel herself was busy ordering the destruction of evidence of her involvement in the waterboarding of prisoners. And Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia announced this week that he will back Haspel.
The panel is expected to send the nomination on to the full Senate in coming weeks where confirmation will be tight.
Haspel's confirmation had been complicated by an intent to vote "no" by Sen. Mr Trump said Democrats like Donnelly say one thing, "and then they go to Washington and vote for the radical, liberal agenda".
Over the past few days, Mike Braun, the Republican nominee for Senate in IN, attacked Donnelly for being undecided on Haspel's nomination and playing a political game with his vote, the Washington Free Beacon reported.
