More illnesses confirmed in Salmonella outbreak traced to eggs

A salmonella outbreak that led to a recall of almost 207 million eggs has now sickened almost three dozen people in states along the East Coast.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention announced Thursday those infected with salmonella had reported feeling ill between November 16, 2017 and April 14.

Additional illnesses continue to be confirmed in an outbreak of Salmonella traced to eggs from Rose Acre Farms.

Eggs produced at the farm are distributed to retail stores and restaurants in Colorado, Florida, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia and the Carolinas.

In fact, the CDC reported that eight people in Virginia had been sickened as of May 9.

And the number of total illnesses is a dozen more since the initial recall notice was issued last month.

In addition to shipping the eggs to grocery stores, Rose Acre Farms sent them to restaurants. The recalled eggs were sold under brand names such as Great Value, Country Daybreak and Crystal Farms.

"Check egg cartons for the following numbers: P-1065 (the plant number) and another set of numbers between 011 and 102 (the Julian date), or, for Publix and Sunups egg cartons, plant number P-1359D and Julian date 048A or 049A with Best By dates of April 02 and April 03", the CDC advised consumers. "Rose Acre Farms takes food safety and the welfare of our hens, workers, and consumers very seriously".

Salmonella braenderup is a bacteria that can be found in raw foods and causes symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever, usually about 12 to 72 hours after infection, though the illness can sometimes take weeks to develop. It is being urged that if you or anyone you know present these symptoms after ingested recalled eggs to contact your doctor and get treatment immediately. Initially, 22 people were sickened.

The company pulled 206 million eggs from shelves in April, but the CDC says some might still be developing infections.
