It's confirmed: Ramadan will begin on May 17 in the UAE

Ramadan is a sombre period of spiritual reflection, daylight fasting and increased charitable behaviour for Muslims. Yakubu Dogara, has urged the faithful in Nigeria to use the period to pray for peace, unity, security, socio-economic development and political stability of the country.

Ramadan is believed to be a time of intense spirituality when the believers are surrounded by angels, the gates of heaven are open, and Allah's blessings and mercy are abundant.

Ramadan takes place during the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and marks the time when the Koran was first revealed to the Prophet Mohammed.

RAMADAN is noticed by Muslims world wide as a month of fasting to commemorate "the most effective of occasions".

The President gave the challenge in his Ramadan message to Muslims issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, in Abuja on Wednesday.

The daily fast will first be broken with a sip of water and some dates at sunset, NBC News reported. The month long observance which will begin from either May 15 or May 16 will see the Muslims observing fasting from sunrise to sunset, Reciting Quran, attending their prayer sessions and much more.

For the record, several European and Muslim countries are to observe the month of Ramadan on Thursday, 17th of May, such as France, Belgium, Algeria, UK, Egypt and Saudi Arabia. People who suffer from any illness, or those who are travelling, elderly people, pregnant women and those going through their menstrual cycle are barred from keeping a fast.
