The right-wing pastor has in past called Islam a "false religion", threatened Jews with hell and likened homosexuality to a "perversion".

Asked if he could understand why people are offended by his remarks, Jeffress told a tall tale.

The Anti-Defamation League also criticized Jeffress' prayer and labeled him as "unrepentant".

"And because of that courage of our President, we gather here today to consecrate the ground upon which the United States Embassy will stand reminding the dictators of the world that America and Israel are forever united", he added. And that's not the message that I think many people associate with Pastor Jeffress. Last October, the president called the controversial pastor a "wonderful man".

Appearing on Fox Business' Lou Dobbs Tonight, Jeffress denied that he was a bigot. "Many of those comments are either manufactured or ripped out of context".

"Well. I'm very grateful @robertjeffress boldly stands for Truth and is representing Jesus at the dedication of the Embassy in Jerusalem", former Southern Baptist Convention President Jack Graham wrote in a tweet responding to Romney's comments.

On Monday morning, Mitt Romney took to Twitter to denounce Jeffress by invoking remarks he made about Jews and Mormonism, calling him a "religious bigot".

A keen advocate for the Jerusalem embassy move, Jeffress tweeted in advance of the ceremony: "Jerusalem has been the object of the affection of both Jews and Christians down through history and the touchstone of prophecy, but most importantly, God gave Jerusalem - and the rest of the Holy Land - to the Jewish people". And the fact that I and tens of millions of evangelical Christians still believe that is not bigoted and it's not newsworthy.
