World number one Simona Halep is two wins away from her maiden grand slam singles title after defeating Angelique Kerber at the French Open to set up a semi-final against Garbine Muguruza.

Simona Halep went from out-of-sorts to on-target against Angelique Kerber, scrambling to every ball and staying the course to erase an early deficit.

There were no such fireworks this time, though, with Halep sealing a 6-7 (7-2) 6-3 6-2 victory. I stayed focused. I never gave up.

Muguruza, who is 3-1 against the No. 1-seeded Halep in her career, has never squared off with her in a Grand Slam.

Former number one Muguruza takes on current incumbent Halep on Thursday with the victor to be assured of the top ranking as well as a place in the Roland Garros final.

Muguruza also dismissed the idea she is favourite against Halep, adding: "No, I don't feel I'm favorite for this match, because she's played better than I have this year".

Matic, who Mourinho also coached at Chelsea , featured 48 times this past season, second most on the team to only Romelu Lukaku. Neymar and Roberto Firmino got the goals as Brazil continued their preparations for Russian Federation with a victory.

Serena Williams might have fancied meeting this version of Sharapova, who made six double faults and 27 unforced errors.

On the match Sharapova admitted that Muguruza was superior: 'I think she did a lot of things better than I did.

Nadal, a 10-time champion at Roland Garros, had not ceded a set in Paris since 2015, when he was beaten in the quarterfinals by Novak Djokovic.

Simona Halep fought back to even the set at 6-6, and while she still lost in a tiebreak, she gained plenty of momentum going forward.

Nadal lost the opener 6-4 against 11th-seeded Diego Schwartzman but began to play better after a rain delay of just under an hour.

Firstly, Halep has been the tournament favourite for virtually the entire event.

In Thursday's other semi-final, US Open champion Sloane Stephens will take on fellow American and close friend Madison Keys who she beat 6-3, 6-0 in the final in NY last September.

"I think my body will need a little bit of rest, but mentally I'm ready to go", said five-time major victor Sharapova.

On Wednesday, Halep looked anything but the top seed, slipping 4-0 down in the first set before she rallied to defeat Kerber, a two-time major victor who had exited in the first round in Paris in the last two years.

Five-time Grand Slam champion Sharapova was able to put her feet up when Serena Williams retired due to injury ahead of their eagerly awaited showdown on Monday but she was off the pace two days later in Paris.

"I think there is a lot of autobiographies out in the world, especially in the sporting world, that don't necessarily speak about whether they were rivals or someone they competed against". She is 48-2 in majors after winning the opening set. Ironically, perhaps, the only one missing is the Slam everyone expects her to someday win: Wimbledon.

But this gesture towards her coach Darren Cahill was more than a celebratory pose, it was a sign that this was 'the new Simo'.
