Marijuana will become fully legal in Canada on 17 October, prime minister Justin Trudeau has said, ushering in a landmark change that he expects will take significant chunk out of profits flowing to organised crime.

Yesterday, the Canadian government rejected the Senates recommended amendments, sent back the bill and late last night it was approved as is with a vote of 52 in favour, and 29 against.

Uruguay became the first country to legalize the sale of cannabis for recreational use in December 2013 while nine USA states and the District of Columbia also allow recreational marijuana use.

TORONTO - Marijuana will be legal nationwide in Canada starting October 17 in a move that should take market share away from organized crime and protect the country's youth, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Wednesday.

It is likely that by mid-September, Canadians will be able to buy cannabis and cannabis oil grown by licensed producers at various retail locations.

Pete Ricketts was among those opponents, although he had been seeking a compromise at the time the bill failed. That's because they typically have a physical store in whatever state the purchase is being shipped to.

Under the law, adults 18 and up will be allowed to possess up to ounce of weed for recreational use, and grow a maximum of four plants.

"Now we can start to tackle some of the harms of cannabis", said Sen.

The Senate has officially passed Bill C-45, The Cannabis Act, essentially legalizing cannabis in Canada.

For instance, it is illegal to order marijuana online and have it sent through the mail in the USA, but Canadians will be able to do so once the law comes into effect.

In 2001, Canada authorised the use of marijuana for therapeutic purposes.

"It's been too easy for our kids to get marijuana-and for criminals to reap the profits", Trudeau said on Twitter. Today, we change that.

The bill was passed by 205 votes to 82 in the House of Commons. This system may suit Canada's disposition, but it flies in the face of the traditions of the USA: in general, when the federal government decides it doesn't want to ban something, it does not mandate that the states or localities follow suit.

The government says that, following extensive consultation with Canadians, provincial and territorial governments and Indigenous communities, the task force presented recommendations that have served as the foundation for the government's legislative work. "Once C-45 has been given royal assent then we will have the time to ensure that the federal regulations are in place in terms of what it means for the province", he explains. Some provinces, including Alberta, British Columbia, and Manitoba, plan to license private retailers, while others, such as Ontario and Quebec, will sell marijuana through the same government-run system that distributes liquor. By comparison, the minimum consumption age for marijuana in all the US states that have legalized recreational use is 21, corresponding to the higher drinking age.
