Golden Retriever suffers rattlesnake bite guarding owner on hike

'It was a lovely morning but as we were walking down the hill I literally nearly stepped on a mf rattlesnake, ' Godwin wrote on Facebook.

Godwin says on Facebook that Todd is recovering and is "being a normal puppy".

"It just so happened that he got in the way or at least he was too curious to see what was next to my legs, which saved me from getting bitten", she added.

That's when Todd literally stepped up in Godwin's defense. "Then, that's when he struck Todd and then he started to rattle".

Godwin told 12 News she broke plenty of traffic laws as she rushed Todd to a hospital. According to, Godwin's medical expenses for Todd were $1,500. She said her courageous dog is doing "so well", and she is amazed by how quickly he is recovering from the potentially-deadly bite.

"So this morning was up bright and early to go on a hike on 7th street carefree", she wrote in a caption accompanying the photos.
