As part of his plea agreement to cooperate with prosecutors, Gates also admitted to lying to investigators from the special counsel's office - a fact Downing also seized upon. Andres sought to rehabilitate Gates with a series of rapid-fire questions about financial machinations underpinning the tax- and bank-fraud case against Manafort.

Rick Gates leaves federal court in Washington, Feb. 23, 2018. Since then, Gates has assisted special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

For most of the trial, Manafort's lawyers have ceded that numerous financial documents he submitted to the IRS, banks, and his accountants contained falsified information.

It's unclear whether Ellis was only apologizing for the mixup with the IRS agent.

Manafort's attorney Kevin Downing asked whether Gates had four extramarital affairs - and not just one overseas 10 years ago - implying that Gates might have lied to special counsel Robert Mueller's team and could put his plea deal in jeopardy.

The judge's comments were in response to a written filing by prosecutors arguing that Ellis should instruct the jury that he made an error in admonishing them during the Wednesday testimony of IRS agent Michael Welch. These questions about Gates' extramarital tryst also carried faint echoes of Trump, coming less than a month after the release of a tape in which Trump can be heard discussing buying the rights to the story of a woman who claimed to have had an affair with him.

"But like any human, and this robe doesn't make me anything other than human, I sometimes make mistakes". Gates said it was a mistake a decade ago that he regretted.

As well as being a senior aide on Trump's election campaign, Gates served as the deputy chairman of the United States president's inaugural committee.

Prosecutors zeroed in on the loan fraud charges against Manafort, who faces 18 total counts of tax evasion and bank fraud and a maximum 305-year prison sentence if the Eastern Virginia jury finds him guilty.

He scoffed at the idea Mr Gates had repented for his actions, noting that prosecutors have said they won't oppose his bid for probation and getting him to acknowledge he had not repaid the money he had taken from Mr Manafort.

Andres also revisited the embezzlement Gates committed against Manafort.

But it was Gates' testimony that has generated the most drama, as the witness admitted embezzling hundreds of thousands of dollars from his boss, confessed to an extramarital affair and turned in spectacular fashion against a longtime mentor.

"Because I don't want to get into trouble for some facial expression", Mr. Andres said.

"Mr. Manafort requested. that we did not disclose foreign bank accounts", Gates testified. Magionos, who is a CPA and a certified fraud examiner, said she had been assigned to the Manafort investigation to conduct a financial analysis.

Dorsey said on Twitter that the company would not cave to "outside pressure". Darcy has also been lobbying for InfoWars to be banned on Twitter.

"The loan was way over the maximum" for an investment property rather than a home, she said. He said there were 15 secret accounts.

According to testimony, he used the accounts to receive payments from Ukrainian oligarchs.

Funds "should be in your account today". He faces a separate trial in Washington in September on charges including conspiracy against the USA and money laundering.

That's important to prosecutors, who need to not only prove Manafort skimped on paying millions of dollars in taxes.

Prosecutors said they plan to conclude their case on Friday.

When Trump asked Perlmutter, a friend and confidante, to help put together his government in December 2016, he agreed to be an outside adviser, selected veterans as his focus, and roped in two other friends, Palm Beach doctor Bruce Moskovitz and lawyer Marc Sherman, Arnsdorf says.

Multiple bank officials said accurate information is essential for them as they decide whether to approve a loan.
