The men's singles event of the US Open witnessed a seismic shock of sorts on Tuesday with unheralded John Millman stunning Roger Federer 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7), 7-6 (3).

Sousa arrived at the season's final Grand Slam in awful form having lost his last seven matches but suddenly found his game on the Flushing Meadows hardcourts knocking off two seeded players, number 12 Pablo Carreno Busta and number 17 Lucas Pouille, on route to the last 16.

This, however, dwarfed it, a win over arguably the greatest of all time to reach his first Grand Slam quarterfinal against a decidedly pro-Federer crowd.

"I'm probably in a little bit of disbelief", Millman said after smashing Federer's 40-from-40 record against non-top 50-ranked rivals at the US Open.

The third set was a much tighter affair with just one break chance to Federer in the very first game as it went to a tiebreak, Federer squandering a set point at 6-5 before Millman clinched to go ahead point at the second attempt to lead for the first time.

"I felt like a deer in the headlights to begin with, to be honest", he said.

Millman's 3-6 7-5 7-6 7-6 victory represents a career highlight for the 29-year-old, who is set to rise from World No.55 in the rankings.

He will next face No. 7 seed Marin Cilic who ousted No. 10 seed David Goffin 7-6 (6), 6-2, 6-4.

Since then, nine Australians - including Nick Kyrgios only two days ago, Mark Philippoussis in the 2003 Wimbledon final and Lleyton Hewitt seven times - had fallen prey to Federer in 20 straight grand slam matches over nearly 20 years.

The Spaniard will be at that stage for the second time at the US Open, five years after her other run to that round.
