His sentencing came as part of special counsel Robert S. Mueller III's probe that has led to the indictments or convictions of 32 people.

He has testified that senior members of the Trump campaign encouraged him during 2016 to build ties with Russian Federation, including after he told them that Moscow possessed - and could be willing to share - dirt on Trump's election rival Hillary Clinton.

Kyle Cheney, a reporter for Politico, added that D.C. District Court Judge Randolph Moss also sentenced Papadopoulos to a year of supervision, 200 hours of community service, and a $9,500 fine.

He then pleaded guilty to lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation about the his contacts with Joseph Mifsud, a London-based professor with connections to high-ranking Russian officials, who told him in late April 2016 that Russians had "dirt" on Hillary Clinton.

J.D. Gordon, former National Security Adviser for the Trump campaign, echoed similar sentiments, while blasting the Mueller probe.

According to Bloomberg, the DNC said it believed all of the defendants in the case had been served, with the exception of Mifsud.

Told by the professor, Joseph Mifsud, that a Russian operative was "Putin's niece", Papadopoulos credulously repeated that assertion in an email to Trump campaign officials, prosecutors said.

"The President of the United States hindered this investigation more than George Papadopoulos ever did", Breen said.

Lawyers for Mr. Papadopoulos dispute some of the government's characterizations, and they asked the judge to sentence him to probation.

The lawyers argued Papadopoulos lied as he was influenced by the President's aggressive sentiments on the probe.

"I saw him sitting in one picture at a table with me, that's the only thing I know about him", Trump said, referring to a widely circulated photo of Papadopoulos in a meeting with Trump and several other advisers.

Friday was his first public court appearance since he pleaded guilty in October, 2017, to lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation while the case was still sealed.

Papadopoulos also made a similar claim about Sessions last week in court. "I think the judge really took everything into consideration".

"We were hoping for no jail time but two weeks is OK", Maria Stamatopoulos said.

Mr. Sessions has previously testified to Congress that he pushed back against the proposal, but the memo filed by Mr. Papadopoulos's lawyers contradicts Mr. Sessions' account, saying that both Mr. Trump and Mr. Sessions appeared receptive to the idea. Overall, they say Papadopoulos did not provide "substantial assistance".
