The previous longest game since 1970 was a Bears overtime victory against the Ravens in 2013 that took 5 hours, 16 minutes.

The Dolphins and Titans were facing another lightning delay and needed to keep their energy up for the rest of the game.

"It was wild", said Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill, who completed 20-of-28 pass attempts for 230 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in his first start since the 2016 season.

When the game restarted a second time Sunday afternoon, it was four hours behind schedule and already the longest game in National Football League history. By the time it was over more than seven hours later, the late afternoon games were all in the books. On a first-and-10 play for the Titans, Blaine Gabbert hit Walker on a crossing route that went for a 15-yard gain.

The Titans face Houston in their home opener next Sunday. Walker was carted off the field later in the period with a right leg injury.

Lewan was hurt at the end of interception return by Reshad Jones in the third quarter.

"I wasn't as sharp as I like to be", he said.

With the game tied 10-10 early in the fourth quarter, Dolphins kick returner Jakeem Grant fielded a kickoff in end zone and raced up the sideline for a 102-yard touchdown return to give Miami the lead.

"There were a lot of words being said", McCain said, "and I don't think you can write them down".

The Dolphins marched down the field with a 12-play, 98-yard drive in the second quarter to take their first lead.
