Williams said the new features will be available to customers in the US later this year, and will only be available on the Apple Watch Series 4, also announced at Wednesday's event.

The hardware has been tweaked as well, with the two sizes - 40mm and 44mm - rocking screens that are more than 30 per cent larger than the Series 3 watch despite offering a slimmer chassis.

New watch faces have also made their way to the Apple Watch Series 4.

The S4 chip includes a 64-bit dual-core processor that offers up to double performance compared to previous models.

The Apple Watch Series 4 will let users take an electrocardiogram, or ECG, and share it with their doctor.

The new Apple Watch will be available in an array of stainless and aluminum options starting at $399 on September 21, with pre-orders beginning Friday.

Announcing the launch, Apple chief operating officer Jeff Williams said the company had received clearance from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the USA to allow the product to be used as a medical device. Despite the physical overhaul, Apple still managed to wedge in a battery that will remain consistent with the Series 3's 18 hours of usage on a charge. The Apple Watch 4 is $399 and $499 with Global Positioning System as starting prices.

The Apple Watch 4 will be available in silver, gold and space grey. There are also polished and space black versions available with stainless steel.

The new Apple Watch may help the company capture more of the smartwatch market as we head into the typically lucrative holiday buying season. After about 30 seconds, the device measures heart rhythms, classifies them, and alerts the user if there are signs of atrial fibrillation. Cellular models with aluminum cases and a sport band will start at $499 for a 40-mm Watch and $529 for the 44-mm version. With the bigger displays comes more room for complications, up to 8 of them. The ECG feature will initially only be available in the US.

The gizmo can now perform Electrocardiograms to monitor whether its wearer's heart is beating correctly and can automatically make emergency calls if the wearer falls down and doesn't get up after more than a minute. The ECG has received FDA clearance, Apple says.
